FAQs

  • ALTOWA IMAGE is a fine art ocean photography studio and gallery based in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. Founded by photographer Alexander Walsh, the work is shot while swimming in the surf zone, using Sony full-frame cameras and AquaTech water housings. The gallery is located at 371 West 52nd Street, Manhattan, and is open to the public Monday through Friday, 12pm–6pm.

  • Unlike traditional surf or seascape photography shot from shore or a boat, ALTOWA IMAGE images are captured while swimming in the often turbulent coastal surf zones. Alexander Walsh draws on 30 years of ocean and surfing experience to position the camera where no drone or telephoto lens can go. The result is large-format work that feels immersive rather than observational.

  • ALTOWA IMAGE offers three product lines: large-format Wall Art editions produced using acrylic face-mounting starting at $1,600; MicroDoses, smaller open-edition prints on Aluminum Di-bond starting at $250; and Custom Wall Art made to individual size specifications for residential and commercial spaces. All prints are produced with archival inks designed to last decades without fading.

  • An acrylic face-mount is a photographic paper print laminated face-first to a sheet of optical-quality acrylic. The result is exceptional depth, color saturation, and a glass-like surface with no frame required. ALTOWA IMAGE uses this format for its largest Wall Art editions, where the ocean's color and luminosity are most dramatically rendered.

  • Aluminum Di-bond (also called Dibond) is a rigid composite panel made of two thin aluminum sheets bonded to a solid polyethylene core. Printing is done directly on the outer panel. It is lightweight, perfectly flat, and highly durable, making it an ideal substrate for a wide range of environments.

  • Wall Art is available in four sizes. The two largest — 60"×40" and 90"×60" — are unique, one-of-one pieces: once sold, they are never reprinted at that size. Smaller sizes are available in tight limited editions. MicroDoses are open-edition prints at a smaller scale. Custom sizes can be produced for any image on request.

  • A MicroDose is an open-edition fine art print in a smaller format, priced from $250. It's designed to bring original ocean photography into any space without the scale or investment of a full Wall Art edition. The images are chosen to work at the smaller, square format and are produced using Aluminum Di-bond.

  • Standard Wall Art and MicroDose prints can be ordered directly through the website. For custom sizing, commissioned work, or projects requiring visualization and installation services, fill out the Custom Work form or contact alex@altowaimage.com. Mock-up renderings showing your print in your actual space are available.
